| Oxfam begins relief work in cyclone-hit areas | |
Kolkata, June 2 (PTI) The West Bengal government was quick enough to carry out search and rescue operations in the aftermath of the cyclone Aila, but the relief work was not sufficient to meet the needs of the affected people, an international aid agency has said. "Although the (state) government had been very proactive in responding to the cyclone Aila by carrying out immediate search and rescue, the relief operations are not sufficient to meet the needs of the affected people,"Oxfam India CEO Nisha Agarwal said in a statement. Oxfam has begun relief distribution to 10,000 families to complement the government machinery in the Namkhana and Patharpratima blocks of the district, the agency said."The families in the villages and the relief camps are very much exposed to health problems. The villages and camps visited by the Oxfam team are in extreme unhygienic condition,"Oxfam India's Humanitarian Response Manager Zubin Zaman said. Meanwhile, the Ramakrishna Mission said it had begun relief operations in Sagar, Gosaba, Patharpratima, Dhamakhali, Chhotomollakhali, Gangasagar, G-Plot, Sadeshkhali-I and II, Agarhati and Hingalganj. |
