Guwahati, Feb 9 (PTI) The Assam government will present a regular budget for the financial year instead of a vote-on-account, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said today.

The announcement comes in the wake of reports in certain sections that with the assembly elections due in the state next year the government would present a vote-on-account.

On the issue of price rise, Gogoi said since Assam was a consumer state and not a producer one it was not in the right position to determine the price level.

Producing states have more scope to control prices than a state which mostly depends on import of essential commodities, he said and stressed on the need to evolve a mechanism to turn consuming states to producing states so that price rise could be contained.

Farmers in Assam should be equipped with the latest technology and there should be an efficient transport, marketing and distribution network to increase productivity in the state, he added. PTI SB KK
