Jammu, The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for vehicular traffic for the third consecutive day today due to heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel, the gateway to Kashmir.

"Due to continuous and heavy snowfall and fall of stones from hill tops and landslides, the 300-km highway is closed for the third day today at Jawahar Tunnel-Qazigund, Pathal and Ramban sections," police said.

About 500 vehicles are stranded at various places on the highway, which is the only surface link between Kashmir and the rest of the country.

Traffic police allowed over 1200 stranded vehicles to move after creating one-way passage at Jawahar tunnel, about 200 kms from here, last evening, they said.
