Gangtok, Oct 24 (PTI) The media persons today highlighted the discrimination meted against the 2.5 lakh migrant people in Sikkim to the members of National Commission for Economically Backward Classes (NCEBC).

The NCEBC members have been visiting the Himalayan state to assess the status of the poor people here.

The migrant people living in Sikkim for a long time have been denied of socio-economic and political rights by the state governments, mediapersons told NCEBC chairman S R Sinho.

The state government seeks grants from Centre for the entire population but only three lakh locals benefit with the fruits of development and welfare schemes, they said.

The commission should deliberate on these matters while making recommendations, they told NCEBC chairman.

The NCEBC was also urged to suggest regulatory measures for the protection of the socio-economic and political interests of the floating population and people from economically backward castes who are allegedly discriminated by locals. PTI KDK AMD
