New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) A Delhi court today convicted a Pakistani national and his associate for being members of banned terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and possessing explosives three years ago.
Asif Ali, 28, who hailed from Faislabad district in Pakistan, and his associate Mohd Issa, 24, a resident of Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh were held guilty by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma. The court convicted both men under various provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosive Substance Act. Ali was, however, also pronounced guilty under the Foreigners Act for failing to show any valid travel document. According to the prosecution, both the convicts, who were members of LeT, had come to the national capital to carry out explosions. They were arrested by the Delhi police's Special Cell from New Delhi Railway station on August 11, 2006, in possession of 900 grams of explosive substance, two electric detonators and others following a tip off from the Central Intelligence Agency. The convicts worked on the direction of their suspected Pakistan-based handler Daniel who was also incharge of Jammu and Kashmir, the prosecution alleged. The prosecution examined 21 witnesses to prove its charges against the convicts. The court is likely to pronounce the quantum of sentence of the convicts on October 26.
