16 militants among 21 killed in Pak

Islamabad, Sep 19 At least 16 militants and five civilians were killed in violence in Pakistan’s Swat valley and the volatile tribal areas while 51 Taliban fighters surrendered to the security forces today in the Malakand division.

The Frontier Corps said 13 militants were killed in clashes yesterday with the security forces in the Tirah valley of Khyber tribal region, where troops are conducting operations against the banned Lashkar-e-Islam group.

At least three militants were killed in fresh fighting with security forces in the restive Swat valley, TV news channels reported today.

Five civilians were killed near Jerona village in Malakand division when militants opened fire at the pick-up truck in which they were travelling, the military said in a statement.

The security forces continued search and clearance operations in Swat and other parts of Malakand division. Seven militants were apprehended during an operation near Saidu Sharif town in Swat.
