Aurangabad, July 10 (PTI) With an aim to control the increasing number of incidences of suicide by the students who fail to clear their board exams, Maharashtra Government has introduced&aposAllowed To Keep Terms&apos(ATKT).

"The students who have failed in not more than two subjects in Class 10th examinations can avail the benefit of ATKT,"School Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil today said during a press conference.

Under the ATKT, the students who have failed in one or two subjects in their board exam would be allowed to take admission in Class 11th but they would be required to reappear in an exam for the subject they have dropped in and clear it in one of the first two semesters, that is, either in April or in October.

This year, around 2.14 lakh students in the state have failed in the exams.

"And the incidences of suicide and attempt to suicide are at rise. Keeping this in mind we have decided to implement the ATKT facility. The SSC board has sent a proposal to this effect and after it was cleared, we have decided to implement it,"Patil added.

This year, those students, who have failed in not more than two subjects, would be allowed to join class 11th for the academic session 2009-2010.

A proposal to grant ATKT to Class 12th students has been sent to the Higher Education ministry. It will be implemented if the Ministry gives a green signal, the minister added.
