New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) Real-time weather forecast may soon become a reality for Delhiites as the meteorological office has geared up to install hi-tech instruments at various locations in and around the capital.

The outdated measuring instruments are all set to make way for automatic weather stations (AWS) which will help the Indian Met Department venture into an era of nowcasting - providing weather forecast every hour.

The Met office is planning to set up 60 automatic weather stations to generate forecast for small areas (at least for three kilometres) along with doppler weather radars.

"Ten of the 60 proposed weather stations will be in place before this monsoon. Moreover, a doppler radar will be installed at Palam this September and another one might be in place at Mausam Bhavan in the next five years,"IMD Director General Ajit Tyagi told PTI in an interview.

One C Band dual polarization Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) is proposed to be set up in Jaipur to keep a tab on the weather system approaching from the west, Tyagi said, adding, Patiala, Gwalior and Lucknow will also have DWRs that will help the weather office provide comprehensive forecast.
