Seminar to combat small arms smuggling in South, Central Asia

Kathmandu, Jun 17 (PTI) Delegates from 13 countries, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, today participated in a UN-brokered regional seminar in the Nepalese capital to combat arms smuggling in South and Central Asia.

The two-day seminar, first in a series of three sub-regional meets on'Illicit Brokering of Small Arms and Light Weapons'in Asia and the Pacific, began today with an aim to enhance cooperation among the states in the region to address the issue of arms smuggling.

Around 30 delegates from 13 countries in South and Central Asia, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and various international and regional organisations like United Nations, SAARC and INTERPOL, have participated in the seminar.

The objective of the seminar is to identify areas of assistance among the states and enhance cooperation and dialogue to spread awareness against the increasing threat of small arms proliferation in the region, Director of the RCPD Taijiro Kimura said.
