Jaipur, May 29 (PTI) The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) today urged the Centre and state governments to ban oxytocin, a drug used to increase milk production in cattle, saying it is harmful to both animals and humans.

"Humans unknowingly consume the poison along with milk which cause long-term medical problems, including cancer and impotency,"PETA's campaign coordinator Nikhunj Sharma told a press conference here on the occasion of World Milk Day.

The drug results in premature delivery, cause menstrual disorders and impotency in males, Sharma said citing a Union Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry report.

Oxytocin also cause hormonal imbalance in humans, including paralysis, breast and colon cancers, he said.

The NGO also demanded that the living conditions of the cattle in dairy be improved.
