1,207 cases of violence against women in three months

New Delhi, Feb 20 More than 1,200 complaints of violence against women, including rape, molestation and dowry deaths, were registered by the National Commission for Women in the last three months.

Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury stated this in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.

The NCW has received and registered 1,207 complaints from November 2008 to January 2009 where women have been victims of violence, she said.

Incidents of dowry harassment and cruelty top the list with 456 complaints, followed by 249 cases of domestic violence and matrimonial disputes and 190 of rape and attempt to rape, the Minister said.

During the period, 145 dowry deaths have been reported while there were 67 cases of kidnapping, 61 of molestation, eve-teasing or outraging modesty and 27 of sexual harassment at the workplace.

One incident of female foeticide and two of acid attacks have also been reported between November-January.
